The Nordic Art of Hygge
Author: Claire Denman | 11 Jun 2021
Winter has just arrived, and boy does it feel like it came early this year! The cooler temperatures combined with almost weekly downpours, it seems only natural that we would want to spend more time at home, realign ourselves and go back to basics. Enter hygge!
Originating as a Danish concept, hygge has since been embraced all over the world. In essence hygge is about finding enjoyment in the ordinary and making it extra ordinary. Hygge can be experienced on one’s own or with company. At the core of this concept, is the obsession and desire for cosiness’. Winter is a hyggeligt’s dream, think all things; candles, fireplaces, chunky winter knits, indulgent food and beverage.
To help you get your hygge on, we’ve compiled a few things to get you in the mood.
Food & Beverage
It's all about balance. Combine your favourite warm comfort food such as soup with an indulgent glass of red wine. This mantra is exactly what brings hygge lovers solace during their mealtimes.
We've taken some inspiration in the kitchen recently from some of our favourite health food brands and recommend you do the same!
Chai Lattes- https://thehealthychef.com/products/chai-latte
The Healthy Chef has a delicious Chai Latte blend. Perfect served hot or cold and better yet, its caffeine free meaning it’s the perfect couch companion on a cold winter’s night.
JS Health Warm Cinnamon Pears- https://jessicasepel.com/warm-cinnamon-pears/
Perfect as a winter weekend breakfast or a dessert for your dinner guests!
Books
There’s nothing quite like curling up on the couch or in bed with a book whilst it's cold outside. Our current favourites are listed below to ignite your bookish side!
Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo
If you didn’t get around to reading 'Girl, Woman, Other' in 2019 now is definitely the time! This dynamic read is the winner of the Booker Prize 2019.
The Glass Hotel Emily St. John Mandel
Award-winning author Emily St. John Mandel’s newest gripping novel. This is for anyone who enjoys a mystery/ psychological thriller.
Candles
Denmark consumes more candles per capita than any other country in the world [take me to Denmark!]. This makes sense due to the low levels of natural light in Winter. Candles create a natural light and add instant warmth to every room.
It's time to expand your winter fragrance library. Our Current favourites this season for bringing all the hygge vibes by Peppermint Grove are 'Burnt Fig & Pear', 'Vanilla Caramel' and 'Black Orchid & Ginger'.
We're also loving 'Suede & Violet, 'Peony Rose' & 'French Pear' by Moss St. Fragrance.
Lastly, By Mews Collective we're currently burning 'Camellia & White Lotus' along with 'Aged Oak & Maple'.
